Open Studios & Special Drinks

On Thursday, August 18, starting at 7 pm, we want to celebrate with you! Together with the resident artists Mohamed Harb, Mia Sanchez and Gaia Del Santo, and our partners Pro Helvetia – Swiss Arts Council and Sonnenstube Offspace we invite you to a small garden party with open studios, snacks, and special drinks.

In mid-June, Zurich-based artist Gaia Del Santo moved in with us shortly after completing the BA Fine Arts program at the ZHdK. Gaia’s work centers around the becoming of Extremely Online people and the Young-Girl as the ideal consumer model. Through textile, sculpture, and video, she explores the pervasiveness of networked spaces and the effects of the constant self-mythologizing on social media. Gaia’s invitation is the result of an open call to all Swiss art schools. >

Lago Mio is a partner residency of the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia. Since the beginning of July, we have been hosting Mohamed Harb (who lives and works in Gaza), the first Palestinian guest artist of Pro Helvetia in Switzerland. Mohamed is a painter, photographer, video artist, and documentary filmmaker. His short and feature films have been honored at various festivals, such as the Cannes Film Festival in the Palestinian Showcase. >

Until 21 August 2022, we are hosting Basel-based artist MIA SANCHEZ as part of SouvenirSouvenir, curated by SONNENSTUBE Offspace. The program of micro-residencies runs between April and September 2022 as an extended invitation to all participants of this year's Swiss Art Awards – to explore the potential of Ticino, to get in contact with the local social fabric, to promote the building of networks for cultural exchange across borders. At the Open Studios, Mia and Sonnenstube will serve a joint Special Cocktail! >

The Lago Mio Lugano artist residency invites all Fine Arts students from Swiss art schools to apply for a two-month summer residency.

Lago Mio is facing a vibrant 2022, teaming up with the local Sonnenstube Offspace, Kunstverein SALTS in Basel, and the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia. During the time of the residency, our student guest will inhabit the apartment with a fellow resident from our partnership with Pro Helvetia as well as those Swiss Art Awards 2022 nominees participating in the residency program "Souvenir Souvenir", curated by Sonnenstube.

Please send your motivation video (wetransfer, 1 min.) or letter (1’000 characters) plus cv/portfolio (PDF) to info@lagomioresidency.ch (En/De/Fr, deadline 8.5.2022).

We offer free accommodation, 30.- per diem, and the possibility to participate in the program of Souvenir Souvenir. No obligations except the participation in an Open Studio.

We made it!

We would like to thank you very much for your support. You, 47 people, support the residency with 7'500 Swiss francs - and thus make an important contribution to the living costs of our guest artists, the creation of the final exhibition and, above all, the production of our first publication, a printed book with work discussions, interviews, and a video app.

Lago Mio – We need help !

[EN]     In the heart of Lugano we have opened the artist residence Lago Mio, a large apartment with a magnificent mountain and lake panorama – big enough for three artists to stay, work and exhibit. These artists – Chika Anadu (Nigeria), Zayne Armstrong (US) & Tobias Madison (CH) from London, Berlin & New York – are working on three different film projects, all of which have a certain social commitment. The Città di Lugano pays the very high cost of living in Lugano. With a Crowdfunding-campaign, we want to raise the second part of the needed money with the help of interested people. We will invest the required CHF 7,000 in filming costs, the production of the closing exhibition (on Friday, 25 October 2019) and the development of a book with video app.
Crowdfunding is a very reasonable way of raising funds – especially in the arts, which, as is well known, does not appeal to everyone equally. This is where those pay who consider their support valuable. In addition, Lago Mio, as the initiator, returns adequate consideration for your support. [DE]     Im Herzen von Lugano haben wir die Künstlerresidenz Lago Mio eröffnet, eine riesige Wohnung mit grandiosem Berg- und Seepanorama – genug gross, dass drei Künstler_innen darin logieren, arbeiten und ausstellen können. Diese Künstler – Chika Anadu (Nigeria), Zayne Armstrong (US) & Tobias Madison (CH) aus London, Berlin & New York – arbeiten hier an drei verschiedenen Filmprojekten, die alle ein gewisses soziales Engagement verbindet. Die Città di Lugano bezahlt die in Lugano sehr hohen Lebenshaltungskosten. Mit einer Crowdfunding-Kampagne wollen wir nun den 2. Teil des benötigten Geldes mit der Hilfe interessierter Personen beschaffen. Die benötigten 7’000 CHF werden wir in die Kosten der Dreharbeiten, die Produktion der Abschlussausstellung (am Freitag, 25. Oktober 2019) und die Entwicklung eines Buchs mit Videoapp investieren.
Crowdfunding ist eine sehr sinnvolle Art der Mittelbeschaffung – gerade in der Kunst, die bekanntlicherweise nicht jede/n gleichermassen reizt. Lago Mio getting started

Lago Mio vitalized! Last night Chika Anadu, the first artist, moved into her summer residence, and Tobias Madison follows as soon as possible. Furthermore, we are pleased to announce the move in of a third artist: After enlarging the premises of Lago Mio, we invited Zayne Armstrong, an EU based, American-born filmmaker, to join the residency. Convinced that Zayne’s practices and research into pedagogy and the ethics of consent to observe will greatly enrich the artistic community of Lago Mio, we are delighted to welcoming him soon to Lugano for the summer. The opening date of the exhibition has meanwhile been postponed. Most likely we will open on the weekend 25/26 October, 2019 – to have more time for the processing of film footage created here.

Chika Anadu & Tobias Madison at Lago Mio in summer 2019

In March, Lago Mio was inaugurated by artist Johannes Willi, and from July the new residency in the old town of Lugano will open its doors to the next guests. After extensive discussions of the 112 applications, the Jury (Elise Lammer, Giovanna Silva, Benedikt Wyss) decided to invite London-based Nigerian filmmaker Chika Anadu, and Swiss artist Tobias Madison, who currently lives in New York. We chose two artists who will hopefully enrich each other through their practices in socially-engaged filmmaking. The resulting exhibition will take place at the beginning of September. LAGO MIO summer residency – Call for artists

LAGO MIO Lugano is looking for visual artists for its summer residency in July/August 2019.

The lake view residence above the roofs of the old town comprises ten rooms on 200 m2. In addition to the free stay, we plan to provide CHF 1’000/month/artist, a production budget, travel expenses, and personal support. We are in the process of raising funds and will be able to provide more detailed information on the level of support by the application deadline. The jury will be announced at the beginning of April. It selects two artists who live and work at LAGO MIO. The residency ends with a curated closing exhibition. Applications (motivation letter in English of ca. 2'500 characters) by 15 April 2019 to benedikt.wyss@me.com
